India’s number 1 ranked player Anirban Lahiri has confirmed his place in the inaugural Fiji International golf tournament to be played from the 14-17 August.

Lahiri, who has 11 Professional titles to his name, is aiming to add another to his resume when he tees up at the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

“I enjoy competing in different places around the world so I am pleased to add the Fiji International to my schedule,” said delighted Lahiri who recently secured his place in The Open Championship.

“Fiji is a beautiful holiday destination but I will be focused on claiming the title. There are a lot of good players in the field; I look forward to the challenge.”

The announcement Lahiri will compete in the Fiji International comes just days after the 27-year-old qualified for one of the world’s most prestigious tournaments, The Open Championship to be played in July.

His appearance at his second Major championship will cap off a successful 12 months for Lahiri who currently leads the Asian Tour Order of Merit after his win on the Tour in April. He also represented India at the World Cup of Golf in November last year.

Lahiri is the most recent star player to confirm his position at the first Fiji International.

The field will also feature Zimbabwean Nick Price and Fiji’s national hero Vijay Singh.

Price and Singh have both held the World Number 1 position and between them have more than 100 Professional victories including six Major Championships.

“The depth of talent on display at the Fiji International is set to rival that of any of our tournaments,” said Brian Thorburn, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of Australia.

“The addition of Anirban to the Fiji International brings a burst of youth to the field; I am looking forward to watching one of the rising stars of the game.”

The Fiji International will be played at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from 14-17 August and will be Fiji’s first internationally broadcast golf tournament.

Being played for a US$1 million prize purse the Fiji International will be co-sanctioned by the PGA Tour of Australasia and OneAsia.

Proudly supported by the Fijian Government, the Fiji International is expected to produce a multi-million dollar boost for the Fijian economy, in addition to flow on benefits including the growth of the game in the region.

Designed by Singh, the Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course is renowned for its sparkling backdrop of coral reefs and the Pacific Ocean that line 15 out of the 18 championship holes.
