Fiji’s own Vijay Singh will return home for the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways as a two-time winner this year.

Singh, who has won 63 career titles including three majors, secured his most recent tournament victory over the weekend at the Constellation SENIOR PLAYERS Championship.

This adds to his Toshiba Classic title which he secured in March, ensuring Singh returns home for the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways in top form.

“Any time you win a tournament no matter what it is, you feel accomplishment, and that’s what I feel. I feel like I played well, and it’s a win. A win is a win,” said Singh.

These wins both occurred on the Champions Tour, the over-50’s circuit in America which features many of golf’s most successful players making it highly competitive. This becomes Singh’s first major title on the Champions Tour.

Singh secured his SENIOR PLAYERS Championship title with a birdie on the second playoff hole after he and American Jeff Maggert finished 72 holes tied on 20-under the card.

Playing excellent golf all week, Singh fired rounds of 68, 67, 66 and 67 recording just one bogey in four days.

“To win the first major on this tour, I’m really excited about that,” Singh said.

“Winning my first tournament at the beginning of the year was big, and now I’ve won this one, so I look forward to winning a lot more now.

“I always say, you get the first one out of the way, you can win a lot more after that.”

Singh will now be amongst the form players teeing it up in the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways when the tournament tees off at Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course from 2-5 August.

A strong supporter of the tri-sanctioned ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia, European Tour and Asian Tour tournament, Singh has played every year since its inaugural staging in 2014.

Singh has recorded some excellent results in the tournament, making the cut every year highlighted by a tied 10th finish in 2014 and tied 3rd finish in 2015.

In winning form, 2018 presents an excellent opportunity for Singh to record his first official professional victory on home soil and on the course he designed; Natadola Bay Championship Golf Course.

“On behalf of the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways, I would like to extend my congratulations to Vijay Singh on winning his second title of the year and first Champions Tour major,” said Gavin Kirkman, CEO of the PGA of Australia which owns the ISPS HANDA PGA Tour of Australasia and alongside Sports and Entertainment Limited the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways.

“Throughout his career Vijay has been renowned for his pursuit of excellence, hard work and exceptional skill and that still rings true today.

“Vijay is playing some excellent golf and winning form breeds more wins so I am sure that he will put on an exciting show for Fijian sports fans and the world when the Fiji International presented by Fiji Airways is broadcast globally.”
